Everything you need to prepare for IELTS from Pakistan — a 4-week study plan, section-by-section tips, free practice resources, and what score you actually need for UK, Canada, or Australia.
To reach IELTS 6.5 from Pakistan: spend 4–6 weeks on a structured plan — Cambridge past papers for Reading and Listening, IELTS Simon templates for Writing Task 2, and daily speaking recordings for Speaking. The hardest sections for Pakistani students are Writing Task 2 and Speaking. IELTS Academic (not General) is required for all university study visas. Pakistani students from English-medium universities may qualify for a MOI letter instead — ask UVC.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world's most widely accepted English proficiency test — required for study visas to the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and many European universities. For Pakistani students, it is the single biggest non-academic hurdle before getting a visa.
There are two versions: IELTS Academic (for university admission and study visas) and IELTS General Training (for work permits and immigration — not used for student visas). Make sure you book the Academic version.
Your overall band score is an average of four section scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Most countries and universities set a minimum overall band AND minimum sub-scores per section.
Requirements vary by country, level, and university. The table below covers the most common thresholds for Pakistani students:
| Destination | Undergraduate | Postgraduate | Min. Sub-score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🇬🇧 UK (most universities) | 6.0 overall | 6.5 overall | 5.5 per band |
| 🇬🇧 UK (Russell Group) | 6.5 overall | 7.0 overall | 6.0 per band |
| 🇨🇦 Canada (universities) | 6.5 overall | 6.5–7.0 | 6.0 per band |
| 🇨🇦 Canada (colleges) | 6.0 overall | 6.0 overall | 5.5 per band |
| 🇦🇺 Australia | 6.0 overall | 6.5 overall | 5.5 per band |
| 🇮🇪 Ireland | 6.0 overall | 6.5 overall | 5.5 per band |
| 🇩🇪 Germany (English programmes) | 6.0 overall | 6.5 overall | No strict minimum |
| 🇫🇷 France (English programmes) | 5.5–6.0 | 6.0–6.5 | 5.5 per band |
IELTS Academic tests four skills. Pakistani students typically struggle most with Writing (Task 2 essays) and Speaking — these need the most focused preparation.
40 questions. 4 recordings — conversations and monologues. Questions are fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, and matching. You hear each recording once only.
40 questions. 3 long academic texts from books, journals, or newspapers. True/False/Not Given questions trip up most Pakistani students.
Task 1: Describe a graph/chart/diagram (150+ words). Task 2: Discursive essay (250+ words). Task 2 is worth double the marks — never rush it.
Face-to-face with an examiner. 3 parts: introduction, 2-minute talk on a given topic, then a discussion. Fluency and vocabulary range matter more than accent.
This plan assumes 2–3 hours of focused study per day and aims for a 6.5 overall band. Adjust the intensity based on your starting band and target score.

You can retake IELTS as many times as needed — there is no limit or waiting period between attempts. Most students improve their score by 0.5–1.0 band per attempt with focused preparation.
If you scored close to the requirement (e.g., 6.0 when you need 6.5), consider a Pre-Sessional English Programme. Most UK universities offer 5-week or 10-week pre-sessional courses — completing one can waive the IELTS requirement for entry, and the course period counts toward your visa duration.
UVC advisors can map which universities accept pre-sessional routes for your profile — ask at your free consultation.
Tell us your target country and course — our advisors will map the exact requirement and tell you if an MOI letter could skip the test entirely.
Most UK universities require IELTS 6.0-6.5 overall with no band below 5.5 for undergraduate programmes, and IELTS 6.5-7.0 for postgraduate courses. Some universities accept MOI (Medium of Instruction) letters instead of IELTS for Pakistani applicants who studied in English-medium institutions.
Most students need 4-12 weeks of dedicated preparation to reach their target band. Students starting from a B2 English level can typically reach IELTS 6.5 in 4-6 weeks with structured daily practice. Those starting lower should plan 8-12 weeks. Consistent daily practice of 2-3 hours is more effective than occasional long sessions.
Writing is consistently the lowest-scoring section for Pakistani students, particularly Task 2 (essay). This is followed by Speaking. Listening and Reading tend to score higher. Pakistani students often lose marks in True/False/Not Given reading questions and in Writing for coherence and task achievement.
For university admissions and student visas, IELTS Academic is required. IELTS General Training is for migration and work visas, and is NOT accepted by universities for admissions. If your goal is a UK, Australian, or Canadian student visa, you must take IELTS Academic.
